These DVDs came out a few years ago, but just curious if the Michael Shayne movies are worth getting. I know it's considered more screwball than hard boiled noir but I'm a fan of Lloyd Nolan but never seen any of the Michael Shayne films. Worth it?

I just watched all these Mike Shayne films and enjoyed them very much. Yea, more screwball than noir but fun and worth the time. I've been wondering if there was going to be a volume 2.

Keith- Like you I'm a Nolan fan, though I haven't yet picked up the Shayne set. But I remember finding them being highly enjoyable when I watched them on TV when I was a kid.

I haven't seen these Mike Shayne films either. I noticed that one of the titles is Sleepers West. I believe that is based on a novel by Frederick Nebel called Sleepers East (!), which I've read. He was a Black Mask writer and a contemporary of Chandler's (He wrote the short story that The Bribe is based on). Moreover, there is another Shayne film called Time to Kill, which is based on Chandler's The High Window, which was later made into the film noir, The Brasher Doubloon.

All the films are pretty good. They're a bit light to be true noir... lots of slapstick and jokes like The Thin Man... but enjoyable

Some months back, Target stores were selling both sets in a pack for 14 bucks and change. I don't know if they are still on the shelves, but worth checking.
