Give that man a cigar!

An interesting clip about an excellent film. Miles’ music is perfect in Elevator to the Gallows. It makes Jeanne Moreau appear so moody hot. Can’t get enough of this.

Now about that cigar…a Davidoff Grand Cru No. 1 will do just fine.

Here is an example of the Theremin instrument. Its most famous use in film is in The Day the Earth Stood Still (Wise 1951). It is typically associated with 1950s sci-fi flicks

Name that Noir:
Name a film noir in which you can hear a Theremin.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5EzKtn2ARE

You can hear the Theremin (played by Samuel Hoffman) in the following film noirs:

Raw Deal (1948) The Theremin underscores Claire Trevor’s angst ridden voice-over- narration

The Lost Weekend (1945) Ray Milland’s boozed up hallucinations…a rat crawling out of the wall only to be slaughtered by a bat

Impact (1949) stars Ella Raines and her clear mountain lake eyes

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)…sci-fi noir…aliens alienating the earthlings with unilateral ultimatums and alienating music

The Red House (1947) – The woods are spooky

Paul Sawtell composed the musical score for Raw Deal (Mann -1948).

This same score also opens Armored Car Robbery(Fleischer -1950), but Sawtell is un-credited in that film.

I wonder how RKO heisted Sawtell’s Raw Deal score from Reliance and Eagle-Lion? Maybe RKO sent in William Talman and Charles McGraw with heaters to lift the score.

The initial title sequences to Pulp Fiction have absolutely nothing on the opening of the 1963 low-budget bupke A Swingin' Affair (aka Rebel in the Ring). It has the vintage Dick Dale in the flesh preceded by his guitar floating alone in darkness. There are plenty of Carol Reed-like canted camera angles, the editing is top-notch as the cuts speed up to a feverish pitch until the camera finally pans onto the film's hero - early 60's ersatz heart-throb and quintessential thespian, William Wellman Jr.

Hey, thanks for the plug, Rick! I detect a kindred spirit :) I'm just now getting that blog up and running and it's the story of a thousand and one ideas, but little time to do it in.

And I've just gotta hand it to you... the Noir Guitars thread always makes my day when I see a new post, so double thanks to you, friend.

If I may be so bold as to add to the Noir Guitar theme myself... here's Johnny Burnette, his brother Dorsey and Paul Burlison before the uh... less than rockin' "You're Sixteen" days ;)
