Silly old farts
Remembering pop’s Nash parked out front
The pickup on South Street
That Buick Special prowling on the hunt
Reminiscing about movies
They watched as kids

Dulled by noir clichés that repeat and recast
Recurring dreams, calling up dreams of B dreams past
The wheel turns and turns to the likes of Harry Lime
And again the cycle turns wearily for one more crime

Broken shadows fracture familiar faces seen 14 times
Tough guys and rough guys, trench coats and snappy lines
Hep dames, dressed slinky and shiny and nice
But with hearts as cold as ice
Lazy smoke curling…twisting round and round
And no surgeon general giving fair warning about what is sound

Fast sex talk dancing behind venetian blinds…
90 MPH in a 45 zone past bookstores closed for a grind
Make-it-snappy, cleansed of deeze, dem, and doze
A maze of witty circles running around a Hays code

Rain soaked alleys that can cause a fall
Nosferatu shadows on the wall
Cast by a street lamp that makes you feel small
Watched by a bug eyed stranger crawling on the third floor
Tunneling into a hole inhabited by a hapless ace that feeds the human race
Scratching out a buck in a lonely place
They live by night, shadowy creatures out of the past
Only a step away from distorted fright
In the mean streets of dark knights who shoot for a blast

Raw deals, lousy deals, and always broken dreams
Born losers, the kind scammers like to scheme
Tough luck for tough guys and flashy femmes who got creamed

Duped into a wrong turn towards upheaval
Done in by a touch of evil…
Some point blank by dirty money, some by a pot of honey
Others by a blast of silence, wasted by a voodoo alliance
Cooked in a steam bath seen by a single beam of Alton light
Some with not enough blood to keep a chicken alive for a night
Down the twisted turns of Mulholland Drive
Drunken and fallen angels with angel faces…
All with shattered psyche
And lousy hands without aces

Broken by busted dreams
That run amok
By the thousands in endless streams
Dreams DOA because of bad luck

Surreal, existential, expressionist scares
Frantic fingers wriggling from a sewer
Swirling nightmares sprung from sordid affairs
Roller skates glide in a fog of gunfire wrongdoers
Shattering mirrors by sharks without care
A form of left handed human endeavor
These darkened dreams from seven decades afar
Gray islands in rough seas under black skies without a star

Sipping a tad too much Jameson watching Babs late into the night
Chewing Viagra while the new bag snores louder than Niagara
Reminiscing about movies
They watched as kids

Weathered pupils half-listing to noir gurus spout about innocence lost
Just because some knucklehead got double crossed
Slicing the meaning of this and dissecting gat
Well what do you know Raymond, how about that
Another tidy metaphor to stick under the hat

Second guessing what a $19 dream costs
Not really a very great loss
On silver disks like sci-fi UFOs
That used to be the Million Dollar Movie…those flickering RKOs
