    Default John Garfield

Garfield is my favorite noir actor. TCM is airing a bunch of Garfield movies today so if you aren't familiar with him you should get your TIVO going!

Sea Wolf, Between Two Worlds (almost a noir), and Postman Always Rings Twice are on later today.

Eddie has some excellent comments about John in his interview Juke Joint Jonny posted last week....

    here's some video clips:

Default John Garfield (born March 4, 1913, died May 21, 1952)

Born Jacob Julius Garfinkle in NY's Lower East Side on March 4th, 1913, John Garfield was in a noir or three.

He would have been 99 years old today if he was still alive. Sadly, Garfield died at a young age, but the films he left behind are a gift.

The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)

    Nobody Lives Forever (1946)

    Body and Soul (1947)

    Force of Evil (1948)

    The Breaking Point (1950)

a quote from Eddie Muller's Facebook post:
SIXTY YEARS AGO TODAY, John Garfield died at 39 years of age. He inspired audiences and colleagues in equal measure, and directly influenced a generation of actors that followed in his wake ... whether they knew it or not. Done in by a bum ticker, treated too roughly by its owner -- and those who thought they owned him. If you have to go early, it's great to leave a legacy. His is one of the best.

Such a body of work for a man that died far too young!

And the list of roles he almost had is sort of amazing. On the Waterfront was written for him and I think he would have been amazing in that role, no disrespect to Brando. (Brando owes him for turning down Streetcar... as well!)

Just returned from a brief vacation in Los Angeles and spent some time with a family member. She has been the companion of a small bit player in film for many years. She's 64, he's 87.

His name is Angie Synodis and I think the last thing he did, and as he says, tries to forget, was a film titled Invasion Force (1990) as General Juaraz. He thinks it's hilarious that they cast a Greek to play a Mexican general.

He has a couple of pictures of himself and Garfield that go back to the early or mid-40's that he is very proud of.

Hello. Just found your website, and noted some articles and posts on John Garfield. I thought I might post the following here. By the way, I really like this site.

My names is Lori Moore, and I am a huge John Garfield fan, and I wrote an online petition to present to WBs home video and TCM to ask them to finally put together a box-set of John Garfield\'s films for purchase. If you support this petition and believe it is about time that a box-set of John Garfield\'s films become available then please add your name to my petition. I need a lot of names to make this petition successful so please feel free to promote this petition any way would like. If you prefer that your name not be displayed there is a function on the petition site that will allow you to do this, and all that will appear is “Name Not Displayed” and the state where you live. Also, comments are very important in making any petition successful so please, if you feel comfortable about adding a comment I encourage you to do so.
I hope you will add your name to my petition.

    Thank you very much.
    Lori Moore

Here is the link to my petition.

    ...Midnight fell on Franklin Street
And the lamppost bulbs were broke
For the life of me I could not see
But I heard a brand new joke
Two men were standing upon a bridge
One jumped and screamed you lose
And just left the odd man holding
    Those late John Garfield blues...

Garfield was a natural, a kid from the streets, who, unlike many people who come from humble circumstances and become successful, never forgot where he came from. He walked the walk and talked the talk (except. to his credit, when it came to HUAC). I still think Robert Ryan is the King of Noir, but Julie G was like the Prince in Waiting. If he had lived he could have been a memorable Don Corleone.

JG was great, but i too think Robert Ryan is the King of Noir. He was edgy and unpredictable, never entirely good guy or bad, a true existential loner. Miscast in one of his biggest films, The Dirty Dozen, he was no legit organizational man. I see Alain Delon as the French version.
