Another Olive film being released 3/27/12 No Man of Her Own starring Barbara Stanwyck. It is based on a Cornell Woolrich story. I have never seen and can not wait. I have already pre-ordered it from Amazon.

I think they've hit a profitable niche putting out noir DVDs. Bare bones, but always good transfers. Ive bought all the noir discs they've released over the last year or so, and am very much looking forwards to most of those on this list. Good on them.

I found some more noirs listed as licensed by Olive Films for a 2012 release:

    A Double Life (1947)
    The Red Menace (1949) (!!!)
    The Turning Point (1952)
    Shack Out on 101 (1955)

And Orson Welles' noir-tinged Macbeth (1948).

I hope all these noir to be released by Olive happen-they haven't really released much noir. I wonder why they don't list these as upcoming releases on their website.

They've licensed the films but not yet announced them as forthcoming. By licensing them they now have the option of releasing them if they choose to - there's always the chance that not all of them will actually be released, but one has to be encouraged by the fact that Olive is apparently releasing the Losey obscurity THE LAWLESS, a film with what would seem less commercial potential than many of these Republic titles.

On the other hand there is the unfortunate example of Lionsgate which had licensed the Republic films for several years but did very little with them. They currently license the Studio Canal library but have likewise released almost nothing from that vast catalogue, which is a shame because it contains scads of great British and French films, including, I believe, quite a few noir/crime flicks.

On a side note, someone elsewhere pointed out there is an interesting omission from this Olive/Republic list - Frank Borzage's noir MOONRISE. I wonder why?

I hate when companies acquire rights and just sit on them-hopefully Olive will put most, if not all, of these films out.

Some releases of interest from Warner Archive (sorry if some of them are not classic noir):
Warner Bros Film Noir Double Feature - Homicide (1949) and The House Across the Street (1949)
Hugh Sinclair The Saint Double Feature - The Saint's Vacation (1941) and The Saint Meets the Tiger (1943)
    Grand Central Murder (1942)
    Two Smart People (1946) (Remastered)
The Cats (aka I Bastardi ) (1969) (Rita Hayworth in Italian crime drama)

Ashirg, did you find release dates for these? They are not up for pre-order on the Warner Archive page. The double feature looks good; I tend to enjoy the B programmers more than most.

The Cats -- better known as The Bastards is very rare.. but also one of those super-cheap Italian thrillers (with Klaus Kinski!). I would guess Rita Hayworth is in it for 5 minutes tops. Worth looking at though...

I'm a big fan of the Italian Poliziotteschis. A big portion of Euro sleaze with violence, nudity, and - even though they're often low cost productions - great action sequences. Some of the best car chases and car stunts can be found in these flicks and they have some uber-leads like Maurizio Merli, Tomas Milian, Henry Silva or Fabio Testi. I'm definitely picking up this movie.

Ten public domain film noirs are getting released in a single inexpensive set on May 1: http://www.amazon.com/Film-Noir-Coll...3149635&sr=8-5

The titles in this collection are:

    DOA
    BEAT THE DEVIL
    IMPACT
    THE STRANGER
    SCARLET STREET
    SHOCK
    PORT OF NEW YORK
    THEY MADE ME A CRIMINAL
    WHIRLPOOL
    QUICKSAND

Since this set only contains two DVDs, I would expect mediocre picture quality on all ten films. It's a shame we probably won't ever see a decent release of "Beat the Devil."

It may be worth a buy if its cheap enough I haven't seen these three:
    BEAT THE DEVIL
    SHOCK
    PORT OF NEW YORK

I'm new here, thought this might be the best place on the internet to ask this really specific question:

I'm just now buying the Warner Bros. "Film Noir Classic Collection" sets and I'm reluctant to make my purchase knowing full well that a few of the earlier boxes include films we'll likely see on blu-ray someday. Two questions:

The likelihood of them re-releasing these FNCC boxes on blu-ray seems ridiculously slim, right?

I can't say I'm familiar with how Warner Bros. schedules their classic BR releases. Do you think we'll see them release some of the bigger titles like Out of the Past, The Asphalt Jungle, or even Gun Crazy independent of each other anytime soon?

Thanks for any and all help!

Yes. Extremely slim. WB isn't issuing much in the way of classic films on blu-ray, and their noir blu-rays are basically nonexistent, so a box set like this getting re-released in blu seems like quite a long shot at best.

When WB did the Out of the Past remaster, they did it in HD, so that one is a possibility (although still not a strong one). As for the others, I wouldn't hold your breath. Just get the box sets and enjoy them; the transfers on all of the films are excellent.

Indeed. Purchasing the first WB noir box set rekindled my love of noir. I guess you could call 2004 the beginning of noir's "golden age" on DVD. Unfortunately that age no longer exists.

Like Nighthawk said, purchase with extreme confidence. The first, second, and fourth have some real gems within them.

Thanks! And this is the response I was hoping to hear too because I'm looking forward to owning the few that I have seen and seeing the bulk that I haven't!

Maybe you know this too: are the original film transfers are done at DVD quality? In other words, is there no hi-definition source file for which they can simply encode and release a movie like, say, Gun Crazy? Or is it just that studios would need to spend money on some serious cleanup at that resolution?
