Du Rififi au Cine and the follow-up Du Rififi au Cine Vol. 2 are both must-have collections of French crime jazz which are jam-packed with great music, although I see they're now out of print and pricey.

Eric Demarsan's score for Melville's Le Cercle Rouge is still available though and, need I say, wonderful.

Philippe Sarde's score for Georges Lautner's dark 70s political thriller Mort d'un pourri is also available and a damn fine piece of work featuring Stan Getz at his noirish best. I can't recommend this one highly enough. Amazon France has clips available for this album - don't know why Amazon US doesn't.

Thanks for your interest in the Jazz on Film CD box set and sorry about the so far sketchy details. Just to keep you up to date on things, the CD box set release has in fact now been put back until September. There will be a launch upstairs at Ronnie Scotts in which Guy Barker and sextet will perform a suite composed by Guy based on all 7 of the scores on the set accompanied by a projected backdrop of edits from the films. It is released by a new label Jazz on Film that will put out a series of specially designed box sets dedicated to various eras of Jazz-inspired scores starting with Noir of the 1950s. There isn't distribution in US as of yet but the box will be made available on the website in August. I will be sure to keep you all updated and let you know when the website is up and running.

Just saw La Menace, a 1977 French & Canadian outing with Yves Montand and Carol Laure. Gerry Mulligan wrote the score. Montand plays one of those noir "heroes" who makes an idiotic decision followed by other idiotic decisions. Meanwhile Laure spends most of the film in prison. And they didn't even commit a crime. Oy.

Now watching Cloportes (France 1965) with Lino Ventura & Charles Aznavour, more crime comedy than noir. Funky organ driven score by Jimmy Smith.

yes it will be open to the public so please come along.

Reading this thread with interest. Bob De Flambeur(1955), by Jean-Pierre Melville, is an early influence on the New Wave but fits more into the noir-crime genre, and has a semi-jazz score (Eddie Barclay - composer). Very good film with beautiful photography...

This week's NOTW -- I Want to Live! -- has a cool jazz soundtrack.

Here's Bob Sneider's take on the main theme.

Bob Sneider & Joe Locke Film Noir Project

I have the original soundtrack somewhere. Shelly Manne (from Peter Gunn's TV band) is part of it.

The film generated 2 albums-- Gerry Mulligan's The Jazz Combo from I Want to Live (I had that on vinyl at one time) and Johnny Mandel's soundtrack. They may more recently have been released together on 1 CD.

The jazz combo, which appeared in the film, consisted of:
    Art Farmer (trumpet)
    Gerry Mulligan (baritone sax)
    Frank Rosolino (trombone)
Bud Shank (alto sax and flute)
    Pete Jolly (piano)
    Red Mitchell (bass)
    Shelly Manne (drums)

Haven't yet watched it, but Basil Dearden's film ALL NIGHT LONG (1962) has scenes with Charles Mingus and Dave Brubeck performing. Patrick McGoohan (THE PRISONER, SECRET AGENT, HEEL DRIVERS) plays a jazz drummer in the film. It's next on my agenda, I'll do a follow-up once I've finished screening it.

my favorite music scene in all noir
is the one in 'phantom lady'
with Elisha Cook Jr playing the drums!!!
the sexual inuando is simply fantastic.
i really can't believe it made it by the censors.
the only thing close is the scene in the 'big sleep'
where boogie states to the gal working in the book store
that 'i'd lot rather get wet in here!!'

The 5-CD box set, Jazz on Film...Film Noir, that you're enquiring about is actually released at the end of this month now. The launch with Guy Barker at Ronnies was scrapped after the budget for remastering rocketed (it was worth it though!) - there are though definite plans to resurrect it at some point. The box is available for pre-order on Amazon on the Moochin' About label and is available through Discovery distribution in the UK. But a website will be launching very soon on which you will be able to purchase the box. Thanks for your interest and I'll try to keep you all updated.
