Sultry Rita Gam, of half-French and half-Romanian descent, is 83 years old today. Her extraordinary screen presence helped her to carry off the Silver Bear in Berlin for No Exit but it's possible that the highlight of her life was being Grace Kelly's bridesmaid at her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco.
Noir fans will remember her best for her role in the Ray Milland film The Thief (1952) about a nuclear physicist who goes on the lam after being suspected of selling secrets to the Russians. You can watch it here:
However, after winning her Silver Bear for her performance in the Sartre adaptation No Exit, she later re-emerged with a fine role in Klute (1971), the seminal work involving Donald Sutherland and Jane Fonda.
