    Default Name that Noir!

Name that Noir! was one of my favorite threads on the old board. Unfortunatly it died out.

Maybe these photos (from Raven) of Bob's Noir tour of San Francisco will kick start it...

Can you name the film noir associated with these locations? (I've been to a few of these places last year and although I missed Bob's tour I think I know most of them)

    Any guesses?

Not one lousy guess as yet. I thought the BAN members knew their noir!

    1. Point Blank
    2, 3 and 9. Vertigo
That's all I got for now.

#4 is Bogie's hideout in Dark Passage

#5 & #6 The Sniper... the second is where Marie Windsor got it.

#8 and #11 I have no idea... DOA maybe?

#7 might be Joan Crawford's place in Sudden Fear... I suspect the trivia might be wrong on that one though. I don't see it in the film nor is there cliffs behind the property.

Keep on guessing on 7, 8, 9 and 10, but I'll have to admit that photo#2 bears a strong resemblance to The Night of the Living Dead:-)

Johnny may be right about Point Blank, but the definitive answer for #1 is The Man Who Cheated Himself. The photo is of Fort Point where Lt. Ed Cullen (Lee J. Cobb) and Lois Frazer (Jane Wyatt) unsuccessfully hide out. That noted, Johnny’s got numbers 2, 3, and 9 as they all are from Vertigo:

#2 Spot under the Golden Gate (right next to Fort Point) where Judy (Kim Novak) jumps into the bay. The “unusual suspects” are: Rainer, Bruce (Simon Templar), Bob, & Dennis (Raven)

#3 Scotty’s (James Stewart’s) apartment at Jones and Lombard with Bruce and Rainer.

#9 Cemetery at Mission Delores where Judy goes to view Carlotta’s grave.

On the other hand, Steve-O needs to spend a bit more time brushing up on his noirs as he’s got numbers 4, 5, & 6 but isn’t close on 7, 8 & 11.

#4 Irene Jansen’s (Lauren Bacall) apartment at 1360 Montgomery Street where Vincent Parry (Humphrey Bogart) hides out in Dark Passage. If you look closely you can see Bogey in the second floor, front window.

#5 Steps located directly across the street from Irene Jansen’s apartment which are used in both The Sniper and Dark Passage. In this case, Bruce and Bob are poor substitutes from Marie Windsor.

#6 Indeed the spot where Marie Windsor gets it in The Sniper, in front of the Paper Doll Club at 524 Union. You’ll note the joints for rent so maybe it could be the clubhouse for BAN I’m thinking.

I’ll give you all another day before revealing the rest.

#10 is probably the toughest to guess, but 3 of the photos are places from a film that is well known and loved by many of us. Anyone who can't guess #8 by the street sign ought to go to the back of the noir classroom.

#8 is Burritt Alley, where Miles got it in The Maltese Falcon. #12 is where the Sutro Baths was, which was in The Lineup. #10, The Julius Castle, was in Dark Passage, I think, and maybe some scenes from House On Telegraph Hill.#7 is The Whittier Mansion, also featured in The Lineup.

Give Brian a 10 cent cigar! He's dead on all of them which means #11 is the only unidentified spot.

#8 Is the spot where Miles Archer got it in the pump and there's even a plaque on the wall to “commemorate” the occasion, if that’s the right word.

#12 Is the spot near the Cliff House where the Surto Baths (skating rink) were located and used in The Lineup.

#10 Julius Castle (also for rent and a likely headquarters for BAN) is located at the end of Montgomery Street near Irene Jansen’s apartment in Dark Passage and was the “house” used in The House on Telegraph Hill.

#7 The Whittier Manson on Jackson and Laguna was the site of “Dancer” shooting the houseboy in The Lineup.

    Good luck with #11

#11 (I'm assuming the staircase not Mrs. Muir's ghost) is possibly The House On Telegraph Hill?

#11 The Filbert Steps are those Vincent Parry (Bogart) struggles to climb in order to return to Irene Jansen's apartment following his facial plastic surgery in Dark Passage. Yours truly is contemplating a similar procedure while taking a breather on the steps.

Thanks to all for viewing and playing.

Raven climbed those steps while puffing on a 10-inch stogie in his mouth, quite an impressive feat. Arthur Franz also climbs the Filbert Street steps as he's running away after shooting the guy on the tower in The Sniper. Those abandoned buildings and loading docks that he was scurrying through are now all modern office buildings and manicured office parks. In the last 30 years, San Francisco, in its rush to beautify the city, has lost some of the grittiest parts of town like the Embarcadero. It was once a working port with a seaman's hotel and bars, and now it looks like a cosmopolitan European port city.

That being the case, I say we make sure our next "noir tour" includes a side trip to Hoover Dam!

#10 Julius Castle (also for rent and a likely headquarters for BAN) is located at the end of Montgomery Street near Irene Jansen’s apartment in Dark Passage and was the “house” used in The House on Telegraph Hill

Julius' Castle also figures in a scene in Hammet's Sam Spade short, " A Man Called Spade". Spade and Effie Perrine have lunch there: "Spade and Effie Perrine sat at a small table in Julius' Castle on Telegraph Hill. Through the window beside them ferryboats could be seen carrying lights to and from the cities' lights on the other side of the bay."
This story can be found in Hammet's Nightmare Town collection.
