No Way Out, New York Confidential, Nightfall, The Grand Inquisitor (short film by Eddie Muller), Somewhere In The Night and City Of Fear. The latter is very entertaining and seemed to be a precursor to the French New Wave style. Plenty more noirs in my DVD kevyip as I am having a great time!
"and half way through explaining who Lloyd Nolan was... my wife got this glossed over look that made me shut up"
This would be a nice thread Steve - spouses response to our noir addiction. I've simplified it for myself by just watching noirs alone, since my wife finds them, for the most part, too
"depressing", since she claims she wants to be "entertained" like dragging me to see The King's Speech. Anyway, I want to be alone when it comes to watching Darnell in Fallen Angel, Hangover Square, and No Way Out :-)
I have been a long time reader and collector of crime fiction, and it suddenly came to me that there was A LOT of film noir out there that I had not seen. Little did I know how addicting the films would become. It started with LAURA, then to OUT OF THE PAST, and I went crazy from there. I have watched about 25 films in the past six weeks, and I am loving every minute of it. Some of my favorites so far: CRISS CROSS, WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS (Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews are great!), THE KILLERS, NIGHT AND THE CITY, DETOUR, and PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET. This weekend I watched I WALK ALONE, THE BIG COMBO and THE BIG HEAT. Great stuff, lots more to go. Library was a surprisingly good resource for at least half of what I've seen so far.
Welcome, you obviously have very good taste. Olonga: Conflict is well worth a watch, shame there's no official DVD release, above average Bogart Noir.
Finally caught up with the beautiful FNF/UCLA restoration of Joseph Losey's The Prowler. It went places I didn't expect it to, and has a sadness to it that lingers with me. The relationship of Van Helfin and Evelyn Keyes' characters is so dysfunctional, and based on such fragile bonds.
Heflin's character is unhappy with his life in a very real, believable way.
I love that blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo (who wrote this under a nom de plume) is the voice of the radio personality heard throughout the film.
This twisted little movie is going to stay with me. Glad it has been so impeccably restored.
Another re-watch...this time 1937's You Only Live Once directed by Fritz Lang with Henry Fonda, Sylvia Sidney, and Barton MacLane. Not everyone considers this to be noir, but if not, it's pretty close.
Released from prison after three years, ex-con Fonda's life goes downhill quicker than a sled ride. It lives up to the noir related expression that "There are no happy endings."
They were soooo close!
Beautifully said, Steve. There is a loneliness to the main characters that is heart-breaking. They're very vulnerable, small people--it doesn't take much to knock them off-course. Even the affable John Maxwell character and his wife, with their rare rocks, are just sitting ducks for life's little ups and downs.
This movie has stayed with me. Losey was on a roll in '51 with this and his superb re-make of M.
I just watched for the first time High Wall and was very happily surprised by it. It's got loads of atmosphere, an amnesiac vet, and Audrey Totter - what's not to like? I was already a fan of Curtis Bernhardt's Possessed and Conflict but hadn't heard much good about this one. Now, however, I'm convinced that Bernhardt's the real deal as a noir director. He even managed to get a decent performance out of Robert Taylor.
It irritates me, though, that Warners dumped this picture into the Archive instead of putting it into the last noir box set. Instead they padded it out with forgettable junk like Backfire and Crime in the Streets. Grrrr. I'm nervous that Conflict will suffer the same fate as High Wall.
Arthur,I agree with you 100% about High Wall ,both this and Conflict should have been in the last Noir box or the start of a new one.
High Wall
Re-watched "The Killers"
I actually watched Backfire recently and liked it. I see it as another example of the "Disoriented Veteran" branch of film noir. I liked the multiple flashbacks and it had genuine moments of suspense. Besides, with Edmond O'Brien and Virginia Mayo, what's not to like? Cheers!
Glad to hear somebody likes it. Mazel tov!
Went on to the 2nd film in the 1st Gangsters box last night , watched "White Heat" what a Great , great movie , really enjoyed this one a lot , cool look , good cast ...... much more my style vs "Public enemy"
THE BURGLAR. Goodis's hometown comes to life through the eyes of Paul Wendkos, Dan Duryea and Jayne Mansfield
Pitfall- excellent.
Larceny- good but not enough Dan Duryea for my liking.
Cry Danger- disappointing after all the big talk this film gets, it's ok, not even a film noir tho. Best thing about it is the Italian poster arttranslates as 'the slums of Los Angeles'
