    Default DOA: A Noir Musical

News that DOA was being turned into a musical at the Overtime Theatre this October on Broadway (casting call now!) prompted me to think about the two movie versions.

You will remember the plot focuses on Frank Bigelow, who is poisoned and has 48 hours to live. He spends his last hours trying to find his murderer: femme fatales, brutish henchmen, shady accountants, and mysterious gang leaders all figure in the twisted plot.

    DOA - Full movie

The 1950 version starred Edmond O'Brien (who followed this with 711 Ocean Drive) and Pamela Britton - Neville Brand steals the show as a henchman.

The 1969 version with Tom Tryon and the lovely Carolyn Jones (called Colour Me Dead)was very much of its time with hints of psychaedelia.

Finally, the 1988 version had Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. The plot has been enlarged but it's still essentially the same story of a man who only has twenty-four hours to find the person who poisoned him.

Which would be your favourite version and who would you cast as Frank in a new version?

One might say that the Jason Statham film Crank is an action-packed remake of D.O.A.

If I had to choose which is my favorite, would definitely be the 1950 version since it is the original and the only version I've seen.

If there ever was a new version, probably someone like Clive Owen for the role of Frank.

I've seen all 3. The 1950 original is by far the best.
