    Default Detour Remake?

I just found out that Detour was remade in 1992, and it starred, of all people, Tom Neal Jr. in his father's most memorable role. (It's also Neal Jr.'s only screen credit.)

Has anyone seen this? I'm guessing that it's pretty terrible, but I'm just curious to know what you thought of it if you've seen it. Apparently, it uses the original script for the film that was not completely included due to logistical reasons when the original was shot, so the remake includes more plotlines.

There's one VHS copy for sale on amazon--for $1000. Somehow, I doubt it's worth it.

I watched this out of curiosity a number of years ago and thought it, at best, pretty good. It tries to stay faithful to the original with almost identical dialogue, has a low budget look, and included the voice over narration.

The film is 20-30 minutes longer than the original and there is an added plotline involving Al's girlfriend Sue's pursuit of fame and fortune by way of the casting couch.

Both black-and-white and color are used in the production and Tom Neal, Jr. looks a great deal like his father, but his acting ability is limited. Lea Lavish does a capable (though she is no Ann Savage) job as Vera, but as far as she and Tom Neal, Jr. go, I don't think I have ever seen them in anything else.

The films release in 1992, which may have been intentional, happens to be the same year that the classic 1945 version of Detour was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

I remember seeing this in an alcoholic haze some years ago in college... there's interest in it only to note Tom Neal Jr. The quail who played Vera couldn't hold a candle to Ann Savage, however. I'd chalk this one up to a small curiosity... and not much more.

$1000 on Amazon? I should have kept my copy. Maybe that one was my copy. I bought it from VCI Entertainment, which even now lists quite a few obscure US & British noirs on its website. They were advertising it heavily at the time. I probably paid $15 for it some time in the '90s and then traded it to another collector. I also wish I still had my baseball cards from the'50s.
