It looks like three noirs made the top ten blu-rays of the year, too.
#1 - Touch of Evil (Masters of Cinema, UK)
#8 - Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion)
#9 - Sweet Smell of Success (Criterion)
I also don't buy many dvds. But I bought The Prowler at last summer's Noir City Chicago. Glad I saw the film on screen first --also at a noir City -- but I love having the dvd.
I actually still buy DVDs, not blu-rays. For me, the difference between the two is negligible when the DVD transfer is good. And since Warner Archive releases their stuff only on DVD, my DVD intake has actually gone up quite a bit over the last year.
Oh, I don't mind watching dvds. I'm always behind the curve and don't even have a blu-ray player. It's just that I prefer to see the films on the screen in a theater--especially for the first time--and am still able to here in Chicago. This Wednesday I'll be seeing The Brasher Doubloon for the very first time.
Where is The Brasher Doubloon playing in Chicago, Surly? I reviewed it last year: http://ocdviewer.com/2011/03/22/the-...on-feb-6-1947/, but I watched a pretty crummy-looking bootleg.
The Brasher Doubloon is showing 7:30 Wednesday evening at the Portage Theater in a 35mm print. It's presented by the Northwest Chicago Film Society, which has been screening some terrific prints of some very rare films.
