This was a tough sale to take advantage of. They incorporated a lot of new features into their website right before the sale and then the incredible amount of traffic kept most people from taking advantage of the sale. I kept checking in and just kept getting 500 errors.

I checked in the next day about an hour before the sale ended and everything worked fine (they'd stripped away some of the new functions to streamline the site).

I picked up Blu-rays of Sweet Smell of Success (I'm VERY excited about that one ... I saw it once on the big screen but ever since I've had to watch my less-than-perfect regular DVD). I got the new Island of Lost Souls Blu-ray, and the Dazed and Confused Blu-ray (it's a gift for my wife ... it's her favorite movie). I also picked up the Thieves' Highway DVD and the Monsters and Madmen box set.

The Monsters and Madmen box set is a lot of fun. Wait until you see the monster in The Atomic Submarine--it's a real hoot.

Barnes & Noble has extended their Criterion sale until Nov. 26th.

By the way, has anyone seen all the films from Basil Dearden's London Underground? Is it worth getting?

I think so, especially sapphire and victim, which are essentially police procedurals dealing with prejudice (blacks, gays). As such they are somewhat dated, but still pack a punch. Great casts, dirk bogarde, nigel patrick, very noirish look and feel, its the dark and seamy side of london. League of gentlemen is a decent heist film, exarmy officers who think they got the double shuffle; all night long othello in a jazz club. Also well cast, well acted, showing middle class, working class life in post war, prebeatles england. All four are bleak and hardedged films, compable to us noirs like crossfire, they live by night, no way out, odds against tomorrow.
