This is a pretty good one. I don't own a lot of old pulps, but this is in my collection:

Did you know that Fredric Brown was Mickey Spillane's favorite writer?

I've read two of his novels, The Far Cry, which was really good, and His Name Was Death, which was OK.

I really want to see the movie version of The Screaming Mimi! Is the book any good?

The book was good the clips I've seen of the film move everything to what looks like Southern California and they look quite bland to boot.

I like the cover for Bury Me Deep. When was it published? It looks very ... early '80s?

Fredric Brown wrote some terrific stuff, but not nearly as wellknown as contemporaries chandler and hammett. Browns short fiction is now available under the title "Miss Darkness". The Screaming Mimi film is not very good, but the remake, The Bird With the Chrystal Plumage, an Italian giallo, is.

Screaming Mimi is a excellent pulp... downloaded it for the Kindle. Lots of his stuff (I think he's the same as the Fredric Brown scifi writer) cheap if you have a Kindle or a Nook....

Yes, he wrote scifi as well as crime, and sometimes combined them. The novel The Fabulous Clipjoint is pretty good as well.

Brown was well-known for writing some very short SF stories (about a page long) and created the detective team of Ed and Am Hunter:

These books seem like ones I should get. My 'other' background was SF and horror, where I first found Fred Brown's great stories.

If you have The Giant Book of Private Eye Stories (also published as The Mammoth Book of Private Eye Stories) edited by Pronzini and Greenberg, it includes Brown's Ed and Am Hunter story Before She Kills.

So that's what 'Screaming Mimi' is! I didn't understand the reference when I read it recently. Now I can't remember where the reference was... Arg!
The chauffeur's neck remained quiet as we drove through San Francisco towards the Golden Gate Bridge. I could see that his neck had the potential for providing trouble in the future.
