    Default Film Review: 'American Grindhouse'

"Yes, film noir is not necessarily grindhouse cinema, but it represents an era when violence and vice started to be legitimized and they made mainstream all the seedy subjects that were the lifeblood of exploitation industry. It serves as a benchmark for when actual grindhouse filmmakers had to change their methods."

I recently watched American Grindhouse, and I thought it was great. I was expecting a more narrow focus on the exploitation films of the '70s, so I was delighted by how comprehensive it was ... Kroger Babb's "Mom and Dad" ... the black and white "roughies" of the '60s ... etc.

Just watched this and it was a gas, not only did I get to see and hear some of my favorite old hack directors, but we get the added bonus of Eddie Muller and Kim Morgan adding their thoughts and wicked good humor.

    Default American Grindhouse

I finally got around to American Grindhouse documentary on Netflix.

And to my surprise: Eddie Muller is there. He makes some nice comparisons to Film Noir too (of course).

Interesting stuff. There's some truly dark periods of the grindhouse films that I didn't enjoy but most was interesting... I made a nice list of must-watch films for the next few weeks.

There's a thread somewhere around here that devolved into American Grindhouse. I liked this documentary a lot, but I'm also a big horror fan. The first part (half?) of the film would probably be of interest to a lot of folks here, but watch out for the 60s and 70s. The later Grand Guignol period and everything after isn't really for the faint of heart.

I agree. That roughie stuff is something I don't really want to see.
