Default The Last Noir You Bought!

I figured this could be a fun thread to see which noirs people buy on DVD/Blu-Ray/VHS etc. I hope there still are people out there who buy movies?

The last noir I bought was Rififi and In a Lonely Place. I have seen them both before but I felt that I needed them on DVD.

    - Shadow of a Doubt (1943)

"Yes, I killed him. I killed him for money - and a woman - and I didn't get the money and I didn't get the woman. Pretty, isn't it? "

    - Double Indemnity (1944)

I just took advantage of the Criterion sale and picked up Thieves' Highway (DVD) and Sweet Smell of Success (Blu-ray). I used to buy lots of DVDs, but now my purchases are mostly limited to favorite films that I know I'm going to watch over and over and MOD releases of films I want to review for my blog and can't watch any other way.

I'm like that too, I mostly buy favorites or movies that I'm going to watch again and again. I do like to throw in some movies in my shopping cart that I think I'm going to like sometimes though.

Anxiously awaiting the arrival of "They Won't Believe Me" an MOD sold by Amazon. I will pretty much buy any noir that shows up on master lists that I cannot see any other way. I've been working off master lists for 3-4 years now and if I haven't seen it on TCM or FMC, I assume that it's not coming any time soon. I usually wait for sales on MOD's though, because I hate paying $20 for them.

The Big Caper - I was not familiar with this until seeing it mentioned here in a thread by Steve-O, I think. An enjoyable crime/noir flick with a good cast of disreputable characters.

Took a little while to get used to Rory Calhoun in something other than a Western. Wasn't too familiar with Mary Costa who did a fine job,

But, for me, James Gregory stole (no pun intended) the film.

They Won't Believe Me should be a Warner Archive title. Any other release is fishy.

I don't know. Never saw it in Warner Archive before-and I have bought several from them. I guess I shall find out.

Yeah, some of these independently produced DVDs on sale at Amazon are simply the VHS copies released in the 80s made into discs. I thought Olive Films was one of these outfits too but was pleasantly surprised that they're legit.

EDIT: They Won't Believe Me! on Laser Disc! Who still uses one??

Me! Haven't upgraded these noirs, laser still my only copy: The Naked City, Brute Force, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Shadow of a Doubt, The Killing & Killer's Kiss.

Back on topic, latest noirs purchased are in the Columbia Vol. III set.

I just bought The Crooked Way as well. Just received from Amazon. I haven't watched it yet. I also purchased Slightly Scarlet, but have not received yet. Got it for under 5 bucks just to watch Rhonda Fleming in color.

I like The Crooked Way alot. I also bought the DVD and the LA cinematography by John Alton is great. Percy Helton as a flunky allergic to cat dander is a plus. Enjoy!
Rhonda Fleming in color is breathtaking! Besides that, Slightly Scarlet is a fine noir, again with Alton, and based on a tale by James M. Cain.

That's exactly what this appear to be. You can see a big band of noise in the opening credits and there is a narrow (but noticeable) band of noise at the bottom throughout the film. Also starting about the 30 minute mark loud audio pops appear randomly throughout the rest of the movie. This is like a poor man's Alpha classic release-It actually says "THE Won't Believe Me" on the cover! It's also about 20 minutes shorter than the stated run time on IMDB. It's put out by an outfit called TVS Home Video/Margate Entertainment. I paid about $12 which was overpriced for this. They have some other noir on Amazon, but I won't be buying any more unless I am absolutely desperate. Still, I got to see a good film that I was otherwise unable to see-although it leaves me wanting to see a reasonable copy of the full film. Enjoyed seeing "Father Knows Best" as such a profligate. It was an RKO release and I don't know any other way to see it. Really sorry I couldn't make it to DC Noir last fall. Maybe Noir City Chicago 2012?

    Geez, really?

One day, if I'm a good girl, stop my wicked ways, and live clean I will receive this for the $55 I already paid TCM

Have you really not received this yet? I've had mine for at least a week and a half, and it was ordered from TCM.

    Really and truly.

To whom it may concern at TCM: I was only kidding about my wicked ways! Please don't punish me by withholding my DVDs!

All kidding aside, I was hoping to watch a couple this weekend.

I was willing to cut them some slack for the delayed release, but keeping a dedicated BAN member from their noir fix like this is unforgivable! We need a hard-core expediter on the case.
