I wonder if Faulkner used a chart when he wrote the script?
It reminds me of the assignment board in an episode of Car 54, Where Are You? There's a very complex trading of assignments just so Toody and Muldoon can go fishing. Nipsey Russell just destroys Captain Block's beloved assignment board.
Great Chart!!!
Funny thing about that movie, I remember the first time I saw it thinking, "What the Hell? that was confusing."
Then I re-watched, (probably a year or so later) and really paid attention. Then I was thinking, " Was I on something the first time I saw this? It's not that confusing."
If memory serves, this is the first noir I saw, somewhere between the ages of 12 and 14. All I remember is that I couldn't understand anything that was happening.
Actually, the original 1945 version of the "Big Sleep" is a little less confusing. When it was ordered recut and scenes reshot to increase the emphasis on the Bogart and Bacall relationship, key scenes with Regis Toomey's character were cut and some of those lost scenes aided in the plot explanation. The DVD release that has both versions of the film is a must!
Even Jack Warner didn't understand the plot--and he was of course the studio head.
Great chart.
