DRAMA, SOUTH ASIA
While I do tend to focus a lot of my coverage of Indian cinema on the gonzo mainstream stuff, I also dig a lot of the more low key releases, and the Marathi film industry have done a fantastic job with those films in the last few years. The latest to catch my eye is Nikhil Mahajan's Pune 52, a classically styled film noir looking film with this fantastic trailer.
The film's Facebook page summarizes it thusly:
Pune. Circa 1992. The life of a private investigator with a failing marriage takes a dangerous turn after he takes up a case that is both highly complex, and deeply personal.Pune 52 comes to us from the producers of recent festival hit,s and damned good films, Vihir (The Well), Deool(Temple), and India's 2010 Oscar submission,Harishchandrachi Factory. Both of which have won unanimous praise among those who have seen them, which is unfortunately not enough people, I must say.
Pune 52's trailer is, thankfully, subtitled in English, which makes me hopeful, however, my guess is that I probably won't get a chance to see it until it hits the festival circuit, but I will keep my eyes open for this one, it looks fantastic! This trailer was brought to my attention by the venerable Indian film blog Moi Fight Club, which is probably the finest source for independent Indian film news out there.
