in City of Angels, the final show in the 2011-12 season at the Lakewood Theatre Company, located in Lake Oswego. It opens on Friday, May 4 and runs through June10,*$32 adults, $29 seniors. Other discounts are available for students and groups, tickets.
The story unfolds thusly: In a black-and-white world of shadows and streetlights, hardboiled detective Stone (Isaac Lamb) is framed for murder. This is the story-line mystery novelist Stine (Kurt Raimer) is adapting into a screenplay, but Buddy Fiddler (Don Burns), an egotistical producer-director, constantly demands rewrites. secretary, and Gabby (Lauri Jones), Stine’s put-upon wife.
The stress overwhelms Stine, and the fictional Stone steps out of the “reel” world to confront the author. Featuring a jazz score by the late Broadway composer Cy Coleman, the musical weaves together the two plots into one, while showcasing two distinct musical scores.
City of Angels features a book by Larry Gelbart, music by Coleman and lyrics by David Zippel. It won six Tony Awards in 2010 (including best musical), 12 Drama Desk awards (including Outstanding Musical), the 1990 Edgar Award for Best Play and five Olivier Awards.
Director Wade Willis and musical director Alan D. Lytle are at the helm. Other cast members including Chrissy Kelly-Pettit, Benjamin Farmer, Sydney Weir, Jeremy Sloan, Bobby Jackson, Ecaterina Lynn and Catherine Bridge.
