    Default Zift (2008)

An unsettling mash-up of Tarantino, the Kaurismäkis, and Guy Ritchie, 'Zift' is going to take some folks way out of their personal and cultural comfort zones.

It's a Bulgarian neo-noir that on one hand references very familiar noir tropes and specific classics like DOA and Gilda and on the other, stuff that you're not sure where it comes from and maybe don't even want to know.

Your call but here's a short piece that I think represents the movie pretty well.

I saw Zift a couple of years ago, but have no memory of it. Even the IMDb plot summary didn't prompt any recall.

Just finished watching ZIFT. Not the greatest film I've seen, not by a long shot, but interesting because it references so many noirs, neo- and otherwise. You have DOA ( man drinks poison, is informed re. antidote), GILDA (see the film, the reference is blatant), outhouse (COUP DE TORCHON), BLUE VELVET (torch singer, also GILDA of course), RED ROCK WEST (graveyard digging). You have voice-over narrative, flashbacks, B&W cinematography. Regardless of your assessment of this film, you have to give the director (Javor Kardev) kudos for his acknowledgement of precedents.

He has evidently made an impression on potential investors, as he's slated to direct a "special-effects heavy" adaptation of the Theseus and the Minotaur myth. http://www.kalliopefilms.com/
