"Gangster Squad" boasts about as good a cast as you could hope for:*Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Anthony Mackie, Michael Pena and Giovanni Ribisi. And in true noir fashion, Stone appears to play the femme fatale, a gangster's girlfriend who catches Gosling's eye. If Stone and Gosling keep falling into bed together, people are gonna talk.
Based on the book by Paul Lieberman, the screenplay was adapted by Will Beal for director Ruben Fleischer, of "Zombieland"*fame.

Default 'Gangster Squad' shows off noir style in new trailer - Examiner.com

On July 11, Warner Bros. Pictures released another domestic trailer for “Gangster Squad” online. Based on the trailer, the cop drama channels its noir predecessors and promises plenty of scenery-chewing acting from stars Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer (“Zombieland”), “Gangster Squad” is set in late 1940s Los Angeles. The plot centers on a secret police unit of the rough-and-tumble L.A.P.D. , led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Gosling) as they work to take down Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Penn). Cohen, in time-honored Mafia fashion, controls L.A. with the help of a corrupt political system.

As if the synopsis weren’t enough for the period film’s neo-noir cred, “Gangster Squad” is based on journalist Paul Lieberman’s book, “Tales from the Gangster Squad.” The book itself is based on a series of L.A. Times articles chronicling the real-life Gangster Squad’s its focus on Cohen.
The stylish trailer for "Gangster Squad" embraces the drama found in Lieberman’s work, then layers the elements audiences have come to expect from noir film and cop dramas.
Penn plays Cohen with all the wiry intensity we have come to expect from the actor, his character’s personality expressed through his boxing and perpetual sneer. Oh, and his skills with guns, intimidation and violence.
As for the elite police squad, the trailer clearly establishes O’Mara and Wooters (and the rest of the gang) as Cohen’s match – in temperament, Tommy gun-toting ability, and the willingness to step over the thin line of the law. Not only that, the trailer sets up Wooters' pursuit of Cohen’s girlfriend Grace Faraday, played by Emma Stone in full-out femme fatale mode.
As the trailer suggests, “Gangster Squad” is filled with atmospheric details and character actors to sell the film’s neo-noir appeal. The movie rounds out its talented cast with Nick Nolte, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Peña, Navidad Ramirez and Robert Patrick.
“Gangster Squad” will be released to movie theaters nationwide Sept. 7.
Pittsburgh movie-goers look the film, upon release, at the AMC Loews Waterfront 22, SouthSide Works Cinema and Waterworks Cinema 10. Look for locations and movie tickets available for online purchase at Fandango.
