    Default French Film Noir

Ooh la la! I love a good French noir, neo or otherwise, can't beat a good 'policier' IMO.

Id love some recommendations please guys, I own everything Melville ever made, and a few of the others more well known classics, 'Rififi' for example, but am desperate for more.

Help a guy out will offer 'Thanks'

Start by checking the existing threads on Jean Gabin and French noir . I know I did a birthday post on Gabin.

    Not noir or neo, but a few "policier" or "crime thriller" French movies I enjoyed were;
    Tell No One (2006)
Point Blank (2011), this is not a remake of the Lee Marvin picture with the same name
22 Bullets (L'immortel 2010), this one didn't get great reviews but I liked it mostly because Jean Reno is such a good actor.

Bought it on Criterion about a year ago, have yet to watch it but eventually I'll check it out.

I have an extensive collection of French noir or noirish film. Must sees include:

Une si jolie petite plage (1949)
    Hotel du nord (1938)
Le jour se leve (1939). As noted in an earlier post, this was remade as the RKO film The Long Night (1947), with Henry Fonda. The French film is superior.
    Panique (1946)
    Macao, L'enfer du jeu (1939)
    Manèges (1950)

    Pepe le Moko (1937)
    Le quai des brumes (1938)
    Le Dernier tournant (1939)
    Le Corbeau (1943)
    Casque d'Or (1952)
La verite sur Bebe Donge (1952)
    Therese Raquin (1953)
    Touchez pas au grisbi (1954)
    Rififi (1955)
Voici le temps des assassins (1956)
    Le Trou (1960)

Watced La piscine (the Swimming Pool) last night. A sun-drenched drama. The film moves so slowly showing Alain Delon and Romy Schneider splashing in the pool, drinking and partying. It moves so slow (in a good way) you begin to feel you're living in the villa with them. Then an old friend and his sexy teen daughter show up and things get darker. A very good summer movie... would probably go great with Plein soleil (Purple Noon) as a double feature -- unless you're trying to avoid the heat!
(Warning: the video below basically gives away the whole film about 3 minutes in)

Here's one I'd never heard of until recently: Le monte-charge (1962) with Robert Hossein and Lea Massari. Directed by Marcel Bluwal, who (per IMDb) worked mostly in television. Very dark, claustrophobic, disorienting film set on as un-festive a Christmas Eve as you can imagine. AllMovie Guide has the US title as Paris Pick-Up.
