Default The Best Director of Film Noir

There were many great directors who've made some of the best in Film Noir, some only made a couple and would never make a Noir again or and some continued in making great crime and suspense films. There were many forgotten directors that have made some great B-pictures and some I didn't have room to mention but these are in my opinion some who've made the films we love.

In your opinion, which director made the best Film Noir, not the best films in general.

    I just can't vote!
Would it be Fritz Lang? Billy Wilder? Anthony Mann, maybe? Or Robert Wise? And why not Edward Dmytryk or Robert Siodmak?
    No, I can't decide.

How do I choose? It's impossible. They are all great.

So was Robert Aldrich, Curtis Bernhardt, John Cromwell., Michael Curtiz, Andre de Toth, Emilio Fernandez, Samuel Fuller, Edmund Goulding, Henry Hathaway, Phil Karlson, Elia Kazan, Joseph H. Lewis, Rudolph Mate, Robert Rossen, Maxwell Shane, Edgar G. Ulmer, Raoul Walsh, and two dozen others whose names escape me.

    This one's got me stumped.

Sorry, too hard. I could maybe do a top #5 list - but not just one.

yeah... Sam Fuller should probably be there if just for Pickup on South Street... too hard to pick. Mann / Hitchcock / Welles / Wilder. Jeez.

Lang, Hitchcock, Siodmak, Mann, Huston. That'd be my Mt. RushNoir.

All of the names in the list are great for different reasons.

Add Stanley Kubrick and Otto Preminger to Richard's list too.

    And don't forget Jules Dassin.
