The Grifters (1990) Director: Stephen Frears, Writers: Jim Thompson (novel), Donald E. Westlake (screenplay), Stars: Anjelica Huston, John Cusack and Annette Bening as three "grifters" con artists, who intertwine in neo noirsville. Its a great film, a classic Noir/Pulp Fiction tale but still I think it would have looked better if it had been kept in its early 1960 time period and if it had been shot in a stylistic B&W, contemporary 90's and color detracts, but again that is me . Frears shows some inkling style but not quite enough to wow you. 8/10

    Seven (1995)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114369/

He's experienced about as much pain and suffering as anyone I've encountered, give or take, and he still has Hell to look forward to.

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

Seven is directed by David Fincher and written by Andrew Kevin Walker. It stars Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey and R. Lee Ermey. Music is scored by Howard Shore and cinematography by Darius Khondji.

An unnamed US city and two cops are on the trail of a serial killer who kills his victims according to which one of the seven deadly sins they have committed.

Having been stung by the studio interference and negative fall out regarding his directorial debut feature film, Alien 3, David Fincher waited three years before committing to a project that he had control over. The result was Seven, a dark masterpiece of unremitting creeping dread that showcased the work of a clinically excellent director. Seven is not just a movie, it's an experience, an assault on the senses, a jolt to the brain, a trawl through the dark recess of some sick city where it always rains and the darkness holds many fears. This is no boorish slasher movie, it's psychological discord 101, we only see the aftermath of crimes, the discussions of which forces us to delve deep into our own imagination to fill in the blanks, forcing us to go where we don't want to go, you sense the director is somewhere gleefully pulling our strings.

"But that's the point. We see a deadly sin on every street corner, in every home, and we tolerate it. We tolerate it because it's common, it's trivial. We tolerate it morning, noon, and night. Well, not anymore. I'm setting the example. What I've done is going to be puzzled over and studied and followed... forever"

Seven is very much an ultimate horror film, really is there anything more scary than a serial killer who is more smarter than the cops chasing him? Not only that but they are, oblivious as they be, part of the master plan. This killer is not only unstoppable in perpetrating his violent crimes, he is, as Freeman's weary retirement bound Detective Somerset says, methodical and patient. It's going to end bad, the cops know it and so do we, and that's when Fincher and Walker stick their hands into our guts and pull out the last semblance of solids to deliver one of the greatest endings of modern cinema. An ending fit to grace any noir, neo-noir or smart ass psychological horror movie from across the ages. With each viewing of Seven there's the repeating wave of bleak emotions that come as the reversed end credits roll, desolation and disbelief, sadness and shock, our trip through earthly hell is over, but only in the psychical sense!

Faultless cast performances, no doubt eked out by what we now know is a task-master director, photography that brilliantly brings to "light" the melancholic sheen of a decaying society and a Howard Shore score that crawls out of the speakers and cloaks your body like some evil Incubus or Succubus. Seven, a masterpiece of unease and evil wrung out by a master director. 10/10

    Heat (1995)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113277/

You don't live with me, you live among the remains of dead people.

Heat is written and directed by Michael Mann. It stars Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Diane Venora, Ashley Judd, Amy Brennerman and Danny Trejo. Music is scored by Elliot Goldenthal and cinematography by Dante Spinoti.

Big time thief Neil McCauley (DeNiro) is after one last major score before he retires, but hot on his tail is Vincent Hannah (Pacino), a cop equally and methodically as driven as he is himself.

In the build up to Heat's release, much was made of it being the first on screen pairing of DeNiro and Pacino. A mouthwatering prospect for sure, it proved to be worth the wait and unfolds as a lesson in restrained acting with two modern greats affording each other the respect that was due. What we didn't realise in the build up to the film's release, was that it would prove to be one of the greatest cops and robbers movies of all time, brought to us by an auteur director whose kink for realism and commitment to research stands him out from much of the modern directing pack.

Rarely does a film come together as one, where all the cogs of the engine are in tune, but Heat is one such picture. From cast performances to visual aesthetics, to screenplay and actual substance of story, Heat is as meticulous as it is thrilling. There are a myriad of characters brilliantly stitched together in one de-glamorised City of Angels, as plot develops, and each character and their crumbling relationships come under inspection, we are witnessing a coarse viewpoint of human nature, where people's lives are ended or defined by their choices. Everywhere you look, here, there are folk cracking under the strain of being exposed to high end crime, dreams, hopes and happiness are unlikely to be achieved, and this is on both sides of the law.

For Heat, Mann fuses the tonal and visual ticks of Manhunter with that of the adrenalin rushes from Last of the Mohicans, with the former gorgeously born out by Spinoti's pin sharp photography, the latter thrillingly realised by Mann's skill at action set pieces. Once again word of mouth about the key heist and shoot out in the film led to high expectation, and again there is no disappointment. L.A. becomes a battle ground, rapid gunfire punctures the air, cars swerve and crash, bodies fall, visually and aurally it drags you to the edge of your seat, an extended action sequence fit to sit with the best of them. The kicker as well is that because Mann has been so detailed in his characterisations, we care about what happens to all parties, we understand motives and means. Which in a film with such a huge support cast is quite an achievement.

There is enough in Heat to fill out a dozen other cops and robbers films, fans of neo-noir and crime films in general are spoilt supreme here. It's not rocket science really, put a group of great actors together, give them an intelligent script to work from and let them be guided by a director who will not sit still, and you get a great film. Heat, the ultimate predator and prey movie, where from beginning to end it refuses to be lazy or cop out, and energy and thought seeps from every frame. 10/10

Mann was able to do a "first draft" tv movie of HEAT in 89 which was called LA Takedown
and was pretty good, rare for a director to be able to go on and upgrade the material to
    Excellent!

Yeah, he pretty much wanted to make Heat for around 20 years! For me the wait was worth it!

    Murder in the First (1995)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113870/

The definition of rehabilitate: To restore to a state of physical, mental, and moral health through treatment and training.

Murder in the First is directed by Marc Rocco and written by Dan Gordon. It stars Kevin Bacon, Christian Slater, Gary Oldman, Embeth Davidtz, William H. Macy and R. Lee Ermey. Music is scored by Christopher Young and cinematography by Fred Murphy.

Slater stars as James Stamphill, an idealistic young attorney who is tasked with defending Alcatraz prisoner Henri Young (Bacon) who clearly murdered a fellow inmate. But what transpires is that Henri had just spent over three years in solitary confinement for attempting to escape the prison. It's evident, also, that Henri has been the subject of systematic violence perpetrated by sadistic Warden Milton Glenn (Oldman). Stamphill risks his career, and Henri's life, to put Alcatraz and the people in charge on trial.

Inspired by a true story, viewers should note that this is mostly a fictitious film. The truths are readily available on line so I will not waste space divulging the facts here. Suffice to say that Murder in the First is to be judged solely as a work of fiction. But what a film we get, a heart yanking, emotionally upsetting picture showcasing the evil that men do, filling out the narrative with alienation, cruelty, corruption and revenge driven murder. The dehumanising effects of prison abuse has never been so touchingly portrayed as it is here by Bacon, it's a haunting and vivid portrayal of a man pushed to the limits of sanity, a guy living in the dark recess of hell, struggling with every breath to come out into the light. An astonishing performance that once again in Bacon's career was ignored by his Academy peers.

Whilst high on emotional wallop, and some scenes really are tough to watch, the film falls shy of brilliance on account of standard fare for the courtroom sequences. Nothing bad but there's a dramatic thrust missing, and it's not Slater's fault, who is good at being sincere and humanist, the script doesn't provide enough thunder in the trial, in fact often it's too low key for its own good. We get a great snippet of what we are missing as Oldman (another great turn as a angry bastard) loses his cool, but more stomping, shouting and legal soul picking was needed.

Tech credits are very good. Rocco has a good sense of claustrophobic atmosphere, the scenes in the bowels of the prison perfectly portray Young's disorientation, the dank, dark and wet surroundings in keeping with the prisoner's state of mind. The director also favours an impressive roving camera technique that serves the story well. He also slots in a couple of noirish reflection scenes, one sees Glenn lose his cool while shaving and smash the mirror, the result is a distorted reflection, a showing of a fractured psyche. The other sees a prison visit between Stamphill and Young separated by a piece of glass, their respective reflections at first coming off as grotesque, but then slowly blending into one, a sign that maybe lawyer and prisoner will eventually sing from the same song sheet? It's a film that has found its way on to some neo-noir lists, visually and thematically as regards Bacon's character, that is fair enough.

Elsewhere. Murphy's photography is a key component to the tonal flow of the story, while Young's score is a real treat, criminally forgotten it relies on strings and choir for emotive means and succeeds exceptionally well. In support Macy and Davidtz do well with thinly written parts, but Ermey is a joy as the blunderbuss judge presiding over the trial. Nice to see Brad Dourif in the mix as well, even if we ultimately hanker for more of this great character actor. In a year that saw high end emotional drama released with Dead Man Walking and Leaving Las Vegas, Murder in the First sadly had some of its thunder stolen. Which coupled with the fact many refused to accept it fictionalising the Henri Young/Alcatraz story, saw it slip away until the World went internet crazy and it got rediscovered. It deserves to be found still some more, so seek it out film fans. 8/10

    Bound (1996)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115736/

    She's a Lady. Whoa whoa whoa, She's a Lady.

Bound is written and directed by Andrew and Larry Wachowski. It stars Jennifer Tilly, Gina Gershon, Joe Pantoliano, John P. Ryan and Christopher Meloni. Music is scored by Don Davis and cinematography by Bill Pope. Plot finds Violet (Tilly) and Corky (Gershon) as two newly acquainted lovers who plot to steal $2 million of mob money from Violet's boyfriend, Caesar (Pantoliano).

Quite a directorial debut from The Wachowski Brothers, a stylised neo-noir of considerable substance. Where once was man and woman treading the dark paths in film noir's halcyon days, now glides two women, lovers in cahoots, deadly femmes. The beauty of it all is that the lesbian lovers twist is no gimmick, it adds a dangerous quality to the narrative, the coupling is sexy but tender, a pair of gals who are very easy to root for, with extra tension wrung out by the slick characterisations. Both gals have been "bound" by ties in the preceding five years, Corky by way of doing a stretch in prison, let down by a former lover, and Violet in a restrictive relationship with Caesar. As the two come together, trust and betrayal are delicately perched on the see-saw, which way will it tilt?

Much has been made of the sex scene between Corky and Violet that drives the plotting forward, but it would be a shame if Bound is only remembered for this scene. There is no titillation here, no grubby top shelf leanings, it's wonderfully sexy for sure, but natural passion rules the day, a believable union that underpins the drama. How nice, too, to find that in amongst the smouldering story the Wachowski's don't take a lazy option with the character of Caesar. It would have been so easy to just write him as a hapless dupe being spun to his doom by the femmes, but he no idiot, he's brainy and brawny, if the gals are to get away with their plan then they will have to work real hard to succeed. This keeps the narrative true, a rare treat in 90s thrillers.

With the dialogue pinging and Pope's cinematography sharp, tech aspects score high, with the brothers showing some deft visual touches along the way (the blood and paint finale especially is a real cracker). But none of it would impact the way it does without the trio of great performances from the leads. Tilly is slinky and kinky, a Monroesque creation, Gershon goes method, all brooding with intensity, and Pantoliano handles superbly the shift from calm mob launderer to frantic stooge. Great performances doing justice to the rich characterisations on the page. There's a slight irritant that we could have gone a touch deeper with Corky's past, while Meloni's loose cannon is too by the numbers, but they are minor blots on an otherwise terrific neo-noir landscape. 9/10

    Seconds (1966)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060955/

The question of death selection may be the most important decision in your life.

Seconds is directed by John Frankenheimer and adapted to screenplay by Lewis John Carlino from the novel of the same name written by David Ely. It stars Rock Hudson, John Randolph and Salome Jens. Music is scored by Jerry Goldsmith and cinematography by James Wong Howe.

Arthur Hamilton (Randolph) is a middle-aged business man who is tired of his mundane existence, but that is all about to change when he is coerced by a mysterious organisation into faking his own death and letting them create an entirely new look and lifestyle for him. He becomes Tony Wilson (Hudson), a talented artist with a beach front home, things are looking up.......

Feverish, haunting and dripping with dread, the quintessential ingredients of the paranoid thriller. Seconds has them all. From the nightmarish opening Saul Bass credit sequence to the stunning denouement, Seconds is a film that slowly crawls under your skin and stays there for days like an insect tick burrowing away. It's the sort of film that has you wondering if somebody slipped some dubious pill into your drink when you wasn't looking, such is the claustrophobic atmosphere, weird imagery and the use of the SnorriCam. Wong Howe's Oscar nominated black and white photography keeps things bordering on the realm of the surreal, while Goldsmith scores it suitably unusual like, with low rumbles and avant-garde tinkerings flitting in and out of proceedings.

Upon release it was met with very mixed reviews and received a critical mauling at Cannes, a shame since it has since become something of a cult classic. It feels very much ahead of its time, or at the least it's a film where the boldness in themes has mistakenly been viewed as moralising. True, it has a message, the parable is clear, while the mixture of sci-fi, horror, neo-noir and borderline psychedelia often is an uneasy fit; though not being able to pigeon hole it keeps it from charges of lacking initiative. There's also a flabby middle section, the pace stops and the film threatens to lose the dread that has been built up to that point. There's a hippie/pagan wine and sex sequence inserted into the plot that isn't (I believe) in the novel, I understand why the makers did it, it's to establish Tony Wilson's "change" into a carefree member of society, but it doesn't sit right and Frankheimer has to work hard for twenty minutes to wrestle back the paranoia ambiance. Thankfully he does get things back on track whilst garnering a terrific lead performance from Hudson. The support cast are great, too.

Think what happens when you mix Welles' The Trial with The Twilight Zone, add in some dashes of film noir visuality and Stepford Wives like literature, and you get something like Seconds. An itchy viewing experience, sweaty and unique, you certainly will not forget it once viewed. I can still now, some three days after having watched it, hear the screams that form part of the deliriously savage finale. 8/10

I bought this movie on Blu Ray and just finished watching it , On the blu ray disc, both versions are presented Theatrical and Directors cut.
I watched the Directors cut and thought it was fantastic, I did watch the first 20 minutes of the Theatrical cut and found the editing to be very slow going, while the directors
cut really moved the story along smoother and was much more entertaining, I will at some point like to finish watching the Theatrical version.

Also of note, the movie was originally called The Convincer and it's this title that is used in The Directors cut.

    Killer Joe (2011/2)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1726669/

William Friedkin serves up Trailer Trash Neo-Noir with a side order of Fried Chicken.

Killer Joe is directed by William Friedkin and adapted to screenplay by Tracy Letts from his own play of the same name. It stars Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church and Gina Gershon. Music is scored by Tyler Bates and cinematography by Caleb Deschanel. Plot finds Hirsch as Chris Smith, who because he is in severe debt to local thugs, hatches a plan to bump off his waster of a mother and claim the life insurance. Roping in the rest of his trailer dwelling family, he hires Killer Joe (McConaughey), a cop with a sideline in murder, but the Smith's have no idea just what price they will have to pay for his services.

So pulpy, so amusingly dark, Killer Joe is one of those films that will sit at the top of many film fan's best of lists for 2012. Yet if someone came up to me and declared it one of the worst then I certainly will understand. Undeniably it has no widespread appeal, you either get it or you don't, you will either laugh along with Friedkin and his dark observations or you will feel the whole thing is just too ugly to be entertainment. Man it's good to have Friedkin back pushing peoples buttons!

Filmed in Texas in under three weeks, Killer Joe is a film that walks the fine line of misogyny and perversity for perversity's sake. But it never falls over that mark, even though these are scummy characters living in a scummy world, where there's sex and violence, and violent simulated sex and nudity; all of which is cloaked by a sweaty crime gone wrong caper. Much of the film is dialogue driven, rest assured this is very talky, but the director wrings out much tension and salaciousness from every character interaction, the slow-burn approach only heightening the sense of dread. When the finale comes, and it's a cracker-jack ending, there's an almost merciful release that it's all over. These are people you wouldn't want to hang out with ever, only there's Friedkin chuckling away to himself having made us spend an hour and forty minutes with this grime laden crew. If you feel like you need a bath afterwards, that's perfectly natural.

Friedkin has garnered terrific performances from a top line cast. Hirsch (powder-keg), Church (naievity extraordinaire), Temple (virginal piggy in the middle) and Gershon (bold and suspicious), are all giving disturbing credibility to the material, but as good as they are they are trumped considerably by McConaughey. One of the most frustrating actors working today, much like Cage, a ream of poor movies adorn his CV, but once in a while he throws in a performance of such genuine quality that it begs to be acknowledged by his peers. Here as Killer Joe he lays on a Faust like menace, delivering his lines with clinically calm precision, yet still there's a glint in his eye, we know a black heart beats there but he can charm a snake out of its basket, a girl out of her underwear......

Unflinching direction, bravura performances and neo-noir at its near best, one of the best films of 2012 so far. Well, to some of us at least.... 9/10

    Madigan (1968)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063256/

Between The Killers and Dirty Harry, Don Siegel presents Madigan.

Madigan is directed by Don Siegel and adapted to screenplay by Abraham Polonsky and Howard Rodman from the novel The Commissioner written by Richard Dougherty. It stars Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Inger Stevens, Susan Clark, Harry Guardino and James Whitmore. Music is scored by Don Costa and cinematography by Russell Metty.

Plot finds Widmark as Detective Daniel Madigan, who along with his partner Rocco Bonaro (Guardino), loses a suspected murderer who also makes off with their guns. Causing embarrassment to Police Commissioner Anthony Russell (Fonda), who is hardly a fan of Madigan’s methods, they are given 72 hours in which to locate the escapee and bring him in. But as the two men go in search of the crim, Commissioner Russell has various other problems to address, both at work and with matters of the heart. Last thing he needs is a volatile Madigan screwing things up......

Based on a book called The Commissioner, a film originally titled the same, and the most interesting story thread in the picture is that of Henry Fonda’s Commissioner! Then why is the film called Madigan, who is an interesting character that really is only second fiddle in this particular Don Siegel orchestra? It is one of the odd and frustrating things about the piece, the story is complex enough without being unsure who to focus on, a shame because Widmark, Clark, Fonda and Whitmore are doing sterling work for their under pressure director (Siegel was constantly fighting with producer Frank P. Rosenberg).

The themes at play are deliciously enticing, infidelity, police corruption, family strife, friendship, loneliness and identity etc etc, threads are dangled and given thoughtful dialogue passages. But hang on! Wasn’t there a murderer on the loose at the beginning of the film? Half way through the piece I had forgotten about Steve Ihnat’s crim that opened up proceedings, surely that can’t be right? Film looks terrific at day time, though, where Metty’s bold Technicolor photography really gives the New York locations a sense of 70s wonder (I know it’s a 60s movie but it feels very 70s, and in a good way as well), though Costa’s score is far too blunderbuss for narrative themes.

It’s a mixed bag, a film you just know should be better considering the talent in front of and behind the cameras. Ideas at core are strong and worthy of filmic adaptation, while the last quarter is electrifying and crowned by a classic foray into film noir territory. But really this is recommended as just above average entertainment for the cop/crime movie fan. 6/10

    For Tony. RIP

    Man on Fire (2004)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0328107/

Righteous retribution and the John Creasy redemption.

Man on Fire is directed by Tony Scott and adapted to screenplay by Brian Helgeland from the novel of the same name written by A.J. Quinell. It stars Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, Marc Anthony, Rachael Ticotin, Radha Mitchell, Christopher Walken, Giancarlo Giannini, Mickey Rourke and Jesús Ochoa. Music is scored by Harry Gregson-Williams and cinematography by Paul Cameron.

Mexico City and kidnappings are rife. Enter ex-military operative John Creasy (Washington). Often drunk and with no discerning aims in life, Creasy is hired by the Ramos family to act as bodyguard to their young daughter Pita (Fanning). After initially being cold and distant, Creasy starts to form a warm relationship with Pita, but tragedy strikes and Pita is kidnapped. This sets the wheels in motion for Creasy to go on a one man war of revenge against anyone involved in the snatch.

Directed with a raft of deliriously ace neo-noir flourishes by Tony Scott, Man on Fire is 145 minutes of fatalism. From the outset it's evident that this sweaty part of Mexico is home to a tortured soul, a man in desperate need of redemption. John Creasy will get this redemption, by hook or by crook, we know this, the narrative structure quickly pulls us in to impress this fact upon us. How he finds it, both emotionally and physically, is what drives the picture on. This is no ordinary tale of revenge, an excuse for pyrotechnics and inventive deaths, it is about one man's journey to said redemption, his trawl through hell, his personal sacrifice is his calling.

The catalyst is the kidnapping of young Pita Ramos, but where it would have been easy for Scott to jump in early and unleash Creasy hell, the director shows great restraint by affording time to the relationship of John and Pita. Most of the first hour is spent building a bond between them, the child softening the edges of the Creasy exterior, to then enter into his heart as he becomes not just a friend, but a surrogate father as well. It's a very real relationship, a natural one, so when things go pear shaped in the second half of the piece, we care what is happening.

Yet constantly that air of fatalism and pessimism hangs heavy as the plot thickens, the unfolding story pulsing with betrayal at almost every turn, classic neo-noir and Scott amps up the disorientation as we enter a hellish world of social decay. His box of tricks contain jump-cuts, film stock, reverse process, over-saturated colours, kinetic camera work, step-printing and slow-mo, all used to create the perfect tonal discord, a marrying up of the anti-hero's state of mind and that of the realm he has entered.

The film can be accused of pandering to stereotyping Latino baddies, especially irksome since the source novel was based in Italy, and that is a misstep that could have been avoided, but Man on Fire remains one of the most important neo-noirs available to view. It refuses to take easy options, particularly with the jet black finale, it has a grasp on what is required for quintessential neo-noir. Backed by stunning work from Washington, Scott and Cameron, it's a film equally of high technical merit as it is of narrative bite. 9/10

watched the very familiar thriller Persons Unknown (1996) last night. Not too bad... your typical ex cop drunk and trying to redeem himself. He falls in love and hides out from pony tailed Colombian drug dealers only to have a deadly standoff. Naomi Watts before she went a-list is in it, but the standouts are Kelly Lynch and Jon Favreau (who you wouldn't even recognize if you didn't read the credits)

    That was followed by Alias

Described by an IMDB poster as a Belgian "giallo".... which sums it up nicely. Actually, quite a good looking film with very good performances. It's all sex, violence and over-the-top plot twists. A giallo. Enjoyable.

    Miami Vice (2006)

    Vice Vice Baby!

Miami Vice is written and directed by Michael Mann. It stars Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx, Gong Li and Luis Tosar. Music is scored by John Murphy and Klaus Badelt and cinematography by Dion Beebe. An adaptation from the TV series of the same name in the 1980s, the film sees Vice Cops Sonny Crockett (Farrell) and Ricardo Tubbs (Foxx) go undercover to try and smash a narcotics smuggling ring.

Is this Michael Mann’s most divisive film? Perhaps? What we do know is that it ostracised many fans of the TV series it was born out of, whilst simultaneously it flummoxed the casual cops and robbers movie fans who were looking for a Bad Boys type extravaganza. One thing for sure, Mann did it his way and refused to cop out and take any easy option, if he was going to adapt from the TV show he helped make a big success, he was going to put a different spin on it. He was after all a different artist to the producer bloke he was back in the mid to late 1980s, really anyone familiar with his work should have expected a complex, character driven picture with intricacies stitched into the narrative. And so it proved. Gone are the bright colours, pop culture funnies and OTT action sequences so linked forever to Messrs Johnson and Thomas. In is brooding, neo-noir characterisations and a darker colour palette.

In truth the plot is simplicity supreme, but the myriad of characters built into the plot is one of the things that makes Miami Vice fascinating. Elsewhere the visuals carry the Mann hallmarks (nobody does night city scapes like him), the filming techniques stylish and the director crowns his story with a stupendous showdown. Coldness of atmosphere is very much favoured by Mann, danger lurks everywhere for Crockett and Tubbs, and undeniably we the audience feel that peril too. But it doesn’t all work. The pacing, oddly for a Mann film, is choppy, momentum is lost at critical times, and perversely, by keeping Crocket and Tubbs so deep and focused (they barely interact with each other to any great degree of bondinghood), the audience doesn’t really have chance to identify with them. The romantic thread between Crockett and Isabella (Li) doesn’t really help the flow of the piece either, especially since Li looks and sounds uncomfortable with much of the dialogue.

Yet for all its evident problems, it’s a film that pays bigger dividends on revisits, especially if you happen to be a Michael Mann fan any way. Once viewed and digested as to what type of film it is, further viewings become more educational. We can’t suck out the exposition and the languid passages still grate on the nerves, but the craft is quality and Miami Vice is always sly, sexy and savvy. 7.5/10
