I went with 'Badlands' (but have a soft spot for 'Magnum Force'..)
I love so many of these (though must admit that I have yet to watch Badge 373).
Badlands by default... just a pitch perfect film.
I do think the opening sequence of The Laughing Policeman is among the most jaw dropping of that year. Just a great story set-up. In my opinion, the movie loses a little momentum after that... but I'd easily recommend it to Matthau fans.

The poll says best and the post says favorite. My favorite would be Badlands, a great film. But it was a great year..Mean Streets, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, etc. A tough choice for "best". I agree the opening to The Laughing Policeman is excellent. In the 1976 crime film Mikey & Nicky, the characters go by a theatre where The Laughing Policeman is playing.
So many good noirs that year, including several blaxploitation noirs.
I had to leave out many titles because a poll only allows ten options.
The true-life telefilm Honor Thy Father was one of the truest noirs that year, and a very good film, directed by Paul Wendkos.

Badlands just because it is one of my all time favorite movies, period. But I love The Laughing Policeman and also in the same year Walter Matthau did Charley Varrick, a really damn fine film. Walter Matthau was just such a great, soild, all around actor. Yes I am getting off track, just started thinking about all the wonderful movies Matthau made. He was brilliant in Hopscotch, Charade...sorry I'll stop now!
