The translator's job is a difficult one, but I also hate it when they actively change context to make it "relatable" to readers. I notice it all the time with film subtitles. For instance, in La Haine, when the guys are goofing off and talking into an intercom outside of an apartment building, in French they're calling themselves French cartoon characters like Asterix, but the subtitles say American cartoon characters like Snoopy. What's the point?
