Suddenly, the Turkish film industry has a big hit on its hands with Av Mevsimi (2010) clocking up the box office ratings in Turkey and Germany in particular. Stand-up comedian Cem Yilmaz is a revelation as one of three police officers whose lives are disrupted by a murder investigation. Joined by veteran actor Sener Sen as his partner, they team up with a rookie cop to track down the murderer - but the English title, Hunting Season, provides the hint that it's not clear who's hunting whom.
The movie follows hot on the heels of Ejder Kapani (Dragon Trap) and might possibly represent the start of a wave of noir movies from Europe's fastest-growing economy. It's a daring plot. A serial killer is bumping off paedophiles as they are released from prison. Ordinary people acclaim the vigilante as a hero and the two cops who set out to track him down are constantly hampered in their investigations. The film stas Ugur Yucel and features the lovely Berrak Tuzunatac
Berrak Tuzunatac - not just eye candy amidst the action
The Turkish film industry continues to thrive on romantic comedies and seaside postcard type humour but also has a strong tradition of some excellent noir movies over the last few years.
Nine (2002) is a movie about a beautiful homeless girl who is found brutally murdered in a poor neighbourhood of Istanbul. As the cops investigate the murder, more and more is revealed about the underbelly of a city that prides itself on its culture and aspirations on the surface.
Shattered Soul (2006) is a first-class police procedural about a psychiatrist's wife who has blackouts at about the same time as body parts start turning up all over the city. She seems to have connections with each of the victims - could she possibly be the killer?
Finally, On the Count of Zero (2007) is a film that would make Guillermo Del Toro proud. It's about a sweet teenage girl who loses a book that's very precious to her teacher. To try and retrieve it, she agrees to undergo hypnosis. Whilst in the hypnotic state who meets a mystery man who basically scares the sh*t out of her.
