Default Noir City 9 Continues at the Castro Theatre

Robert Siodmak's THE DARK MIRROR (1946) plays at 7:30 PM.Witnesses place Ruth Collins (Olivia de Havilland) at the scene of a grisly murder. When it's discovered she has a twin, Dr. Elliot (Lew Ayres) is brought in to psychologically evaluate them both. When the doc falls for one of them, the other becomes murderously jealous. Noir master Robert Siodmak deftly directs this Oscar-nominated original story, guiding de Havilland through two sensational performances, as the sisters both sweet and sinister. Preservation funded by the Film Foundation.NOT ON DVD!

Irving Reis's CRACK-UP (1947) follows at 9:30 PM A museum curator (Pat O'Brien) survives a massive train wreck, but wakes up an amnesiac. It gets worse. . . . Seems the accident never happened, and now everyone is convinced he's losing his mind. Frederic Brown's ingenious short story "Madman's Holiday" is inventively realized by Irving Reis and enacted by a top-flight cast, including suave, sinister Herbert Marshall and sartorially splendid Claire Trevor.NOT ON DVD!

CRACK-UP is available through Warner Archive, it is a good looking print.

THE DARK MIRROR is available in R2 (Germany) it's an okay print. I assume that the FNF did some nice clean up on this one.

Both good films to see on the big screen

THE DARK MIRROR print we showed was fantastic, and all credit is due to UCLA, The Film Foundation, and Paramount, which undertook the restoration a couple of years ago. The FNF was not involved. You might criticize the slackness in parts of the story, but you can't complain about the fantastic photography of Milton Krasner, which really shines in this wonderful restoration.

Thanks for the info on the restoration, wish I could've seen it. Just came up to SF today, I will be there tonight.
